It’s suddenly fall again, which means Career Fair Season is officially upon us! In the whirlwind of the new semester, it can be easy to forget about the early job search. However, with a few quick tips, you can be ready for the fast approaching recruitment season!

Set Your Goals

What are you hoping to get out of this recruitment season? Are you looking to get a full-time job after graduation? Maybe you’re looking for internships over the summer, or even part-time work throughout the semester to help add to your experience. You might be gathering options so you can have a more focused application approach in the spring. Just coming to get experience in the interview environment is another great reason to attend fairs in the fall. No matter the goal, knowing what you need out of the event will help you and the employers maximize the networking experience.

Do Your Research

You are likely able to find out a list of employers that will be attending your school’s fair, either on handshake or by asking your Career Support Office. If you can, check out some of the organizations attending so you know which representatives you would like to speak to first. As you are looking for organizations you’d like to visit, you should keep some notes on what they do and the roles they already have posted online. Coming to the fair with a good question, and a bit of background on the work they do, will show the representatives that you’re a serious candidate.

Of course you cannot have all your questions answered at a single career fair, but if you are interested in a company, ask them how you can connect with them again, and follow-up. Consider following the company on social media, like the enFocus’ accounts on Facebook, LinkedIn, or Instagram!

Consider How You Present Yourself to Employers

You can also present yourself professionally in a quiet, well-lit space during virtual career fairs. Avoid speaking with organizations while walking or moving, and give your full attention to the employer at hand.

Be Genuine!

It is always important to show respect to anyone you meet and interact with, but respect your personal interests, who you are, and what you value. Throughout your entire career search, make sure that you prioritize your safety, acceptance, and authenticity. With that in mind, there are some professional norms that knowledge of will help convey your legitimacy to employers.

Consider how you present yourself to employers. Dress code for career fairs typically range from business casual to professional dress. It is important to wear something that makes you feel both comfortable and confident. Anticipate extended time walking and standing throughout the event, you may want to opt for comfortable shoes that will give you the endurance you need to meet with all the organizations you plan to visit! If you need extra help, ask your career service office if they have clothing rentals or any other way they may be able to help.

Be Confident, and we can’t wait to meet you!

Not everyone is comfortable in a busy career fair environment. But take a deep breath, gather your courage, and go for it! Employers are looking forward to sharing their organization, and learning more about you.
